Hi, I’m Rei Ku

(they/them)

Registered Social Worker

You can expect a therapy session with me to feel like…

…a space for exploration, to feel heard and held in your experience as you navigate the circumstances around you. My hope is that a session feels like letting out a deep sigh, speaking with a dear friend, or a space where you can laugh, cry, vent, or otherwise express yourself as you need and deserve to!

I define my role as your therapist being…

to co-create a space that feels affirming and safe to explore aspects including identity, life stress and transitions, and more! My approach is collaborative and I welcome feedback. How sessions are structured and my approach really depends on each client and will be individually catered to you. I believe the best outcomes comes from a meaningful therapeutic relationship and honouring the wisdom and preferences of what you bring into sessions.

You’ll enjoy working with me if you’re…

…looking for someone who is warm, curious, and deeply caring. I value social justice and bring an understanding of systemic factors and intersectionality in my practice.

I enjoy clients…

…from a diverse range of backgrounds. Regardless of our similarities or differences, what's most enjoyable is engaging in the process of growth and change together!

What INSPIRES me:

I decided to become a therapist because of my experience navigating the Canadian healthcare system and not feeling seen or represented by the practitioners I saw. This lack of intersectionality in the care I received and not having a sense of belonging is one of the central motivators for my desire to provide care for trans & queer BIPOC folk. I have firsthand understanding of how the power dynamic as a practitioner creates either the opportunity for deeply meaningful work or harm due to a lack of awareness, and I strive to create spaces that allow people to feel accepted and affirmed for their authentic selves.

I constantly strive to self-reflect, grow, and stay aware of systemic/structural factors. I also strongly value feedback and collaboration in sessions and hope to continually evolve to better support the folks I work with!

My lived experience with mental health and navigating the world as a queer, neurodivergent, BIPOC individual also enriches my role. My journey has always involved lots of self-reflection and transformation, and I am a person who flows and shifts with the tides of my life. I apply this concept to my role as a therapist and feel consistently inspired to grow.

I love and feel honoured by the opportunity to build a deep level of trust and care with folks. There is nothing I'd rather do than use my privilege, education, and passion to foster a space where people can feel affirmed and to have a sense of belonging. I feel grateful and fortunate to be able to do so as a therapist!

My social locations and identities are deeply intertwined in the way that I practice. When I hold the grief of my experiences of oppression, I think of the collective grief of my queer, trans, racialized, neurodivergent communities. My lived experience and the wisdom of my communities strongly inform my understandings and my practice.
