Pssst… I’ve got a little secret!  I do truly enjoy my work with clients, but supervision is my true passion.  In fact, I come from a teaching background, and supporting the growth and development of learners is still my first love.

Since taking on my first intern in 2018, I’ve had the honour of supervising over a dozen Masters-level interns and practicum students – most of them right here at Our Landing Place.  I’ve also supervised post-graduate externs, colleagues who needed hours for professional registration, and those who wanted to consult on something specific.

Hi, I'm Shadi (they/them).

My supervision style is kind and supportive but committed to your growth.  This means I will gently challenge you when necessary and ensure you are working near your learning edges.  I take a developmental approach to supervision, meaning that I consider where you’re at in your program or career, and how your supervision needs may differ accordingly.

Just as with my counselling clients, I believe my supervisees bring a wealth of knowledge and wisdom with them, and that we have much to learn from each other.  I’d much rather be a Guide on the Side than the Sage on the Stage.

I also believe that we are not just here to grow your clinical skills – who you are as a person in this work matters.  You are your instrument, as they say!  While supervision and therapy are distinct, and rightly so, there are times when it is appropriate to put aside the case consultation and focus on what’s going on with you.  Especially if it’s impacting your ability to show up in your work in the way that you need to.

My areas of focus as a supervisor are:

  • Polyvagal theory and somatic approaches

  • Anti-oppressive and intersectional praxis

  • Decolonizing counselling and supervision

  • Issues of race, immigration, adjustment and minority stress

  • Gender, sexuality, and ethical/consensual non-monogamy

  • Working with survivors of violence and abuse (including narcissistic abuse)

  • Trauma-informed/competent praxis

  • Group curriculum design and facilitation

  • Rogerian skill development and refinement

I believe the personal is political, and we as counsellors have a responsibility to effect positive change in the world.  I encourage my supervisees to have an eye to social justice throughout their work.  And even though it’s listed above, it bears repeating that I love groups!  If you are interested in group development or facilitation, I’m your guy.  We’ll facilitate together, so you’ll get lots of support and feedback.

If you feel inspired or intrigued by this and would like to see if we’d be a good fit for supervision, I would be delighted to book a free 15-minute initial consultation with you!
