Clinical Supervision

with Julie Stewart, MSW RSW

I LOVE being a therapist. It is precious work. Getting to support other clinicians in exploring the complexities of doing this work ethically, usefully, and sustainably is an added layer of richness and sustenance in my work.

I have facilitated team consultations since 2019 and supervising trainees since 2022. I am a sessional instructor in the Faculty of Social Work MSW program where I teach courses on theory, trauma, and facilitate group supervision. I have also published on the topic of using narrative letters in clinical supervision.

Hi, I'm Julie (they/them).

I am most interested in supporting clinicians to practice in ways that are ethical and authentic to them while being the most useful and least harmful to the people they serve. My approach to supervision is grounded in narrative practice, so it is:

  • dignifying of the therapist’s skills, knowledges, relationships, ethics, and values that inform their practices

  • informed by my social constructionist leanings and inviting the clinician to their own answers using questions and a co-researcher stance

  • interested in the function of power and systemic ways of looking at problems

Areas where I might be particularly useful as a consultant include:

  • grief and loss

  • 2SLGBTQIA+ affirming practices

  • narrative practice

  • non-carceral and non-pathologizing practices

  • brief and single-session practices

I am a registered social worker in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario.
