You can expect a therapy session with me to feel like…
…you, minus the performance — no impressing me, no having it together, no wellness theatre. We'll laugh when there's something to laugh at, and sit in the hard stuff when that's what's called for. Your struggles didn't start in a vacuum, so we'll name how relationships, identity, and systems like capitalism, white supremacy, and cisheteronormativity shape what feels possible. I'll bring compassion and also push back (gently, but for real) on the patterns keeping you stuck, even the ones that feel like home. If it's useful, we might get weird with nature, metaphor, or a tarot card, because insight doesn't only live in the tidy, rational parts of your brain.
Some phrases you may hear me use in sessions:
“What would you say to a friend who was in your position?”
“If you were in charge of All The Things, with no limits or conditions, what would you want to happen next?”
“Is this yours to carry, or was it handed to you?”
I define my role as…
…a thoughtful collaborator and compassionate witness — not guru, not fixer, not the one with all the answers. I'll help you slow down and get curious about what your own answers might be, bringing warmth, humour, and curiosity to how your experiences are shaped by relationships, communities, culture, and systems bigger than us. My job isn't to tell you who to be (that's settler colonialism's job, and it's already got enough recruits), it's to help you reconnect with your own values, strengths, and agency. When it's useful, I'll gently challenge the patterns getting in the way of the life you're trying to build. Think less "expert dispensing wisdom," more "someone in your corner who'll ask good questions and tell you the truth.”
You’ll enjoy working with me if you’re…
…you're a curious human who's tired of squeezing yourself into boxes that were never built with you in mind, someone who questions the rules and "shoulds" you've inherited and cares deeply about people, justice, and the world you're stuck living in. You're not looking for someone to fix you, because you already suspect you're not the one who's broken. You want a therapist who can hold grief and hope, personal struggle and systemic rage, with compassion, curiosity, and a little (okay, a lot) of irreverence.
I enjoy clients who…
…question the rules about who they're supposed to be. I especially love clients who are up for reflection, experimentation, humour, and the occasional gentle nudge. My people tend to be university students and faculty, social justice activists, partners of trans/GNC folks, and community caretakers of all sorts.
I became a social worker after 20+ years as a professor of women's, gender, and sexuality studies, listening to students name their experiences of sexual violence, racism, homo/transphobia, and other assorted horrors of living in this world. I got tired of the gap between knowing why something happens — I could cite you the literature — and actually being able to support someone through what it means to carry it. Therapy lets me bring together my love of critical thinking, social justice, humour, and the messy, beautiful complexity of being human, minus the fifty-minute lecture format and all the marking.
I love being a therapist because I get a front-row seat as people unlearn what they've been told about who they're supposed to be and reconnect with what actually feels true. I'm inspired daily by people's resilience, complexity, creativity, and sheer stubborn willingness to keep showing up in a world that's not making it easy. I love the mix of deep conversation, unexpected insight, and humour — and nothing beats the moment someone realizes they've got more agency and possibility than they thought.
I'm a good therapist because I'm willing to go where the real stuff is — the messy contradictions, the uncomfortable questions, the grief, the anger, the longing, and the moments of unexpected possibility. I bring curiosity, compassion, humour, creativity, and a helpful dose of irreverence to the work, because humans are complicated and, honestly, so is life. I think therapy works best when we question the boxes we've inherited and make more room to be fully ourselves.
My identities and lived experiences shape how I understand both suffering and possibility. I know what it's like to move through systems that privilege some bodies, identities, and ways of being over others, and I also know the power of resistance, community, and rewriting the stories we inherit. That, combined with my background in intersectional feminist, decolonial, and queer theories, social justice teaching and activism, and Wicca as a lived spiritual practice, means I bring a deep knowledge of power, oppression, resilience, and collective care into the room — and you will never have to convince me your experiences are real. I'm here to listen, get curious, challenge the harmful stories you've been handed, and support you in building a life that feels more like your own.
I am inspired by…
Honestly? My clients are my biggest teachers; I'm constantly inspired by the creativity, resilience, and sheer weirdness of humans, the ways people survive, adapt, question, change, and keep becoming. I grow as a therapist by staying curious and challenging my own assumptions, because the day I think I've got it all figured out is the day I stop being useful to anyone. I also keep learning from the people and communities doing the difficult, necessary work of building a more just world.
