Aziz Mirza

Hi, I'm Aziz (he/him).

Areas of Focus

My favourite areas to support clients in are:

  • Identity exploration (gender, sexuality, cultural, self-concept, etc.)

  • Relational connection and protection (compassionate communication, resolution skills, boundary-making, self-advocacy, etc.)

  • Ethical non-monogamy (ENM), relationship anarchy, and other nonconformist relationship structures

  • Trauma, post-traumatic stress, and post-traumatic wisdom (including impacts of intersectionality and structural oppression)

  • I’m a Queer, racialized therapist with a global upbringing, shaped by the richness of multiple cultures, belief systems, and non-dominant identities. These lived experiences fuel my commitment to fostering connection, healing, and belonging, especially for those navigating the margins.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in Psychology, and a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology. These academic roots ground me in the belief that healing happens not just within individuals, but in the context of systems, histories, and relationships. I approach therapy through the transformative power of a psychosocial and systemic lens, always centering care, justice, and relational depth.

Community is important to me. I’m a proud (g)uncle, a dedicated educator and mentor, a mental health advocate, and a consistent source of tea (herbal and verbal) for those I love. I came to this field because I believe everyone deserves a space to be fully seen and supported in their becoming, including me. Whether I’m supporting someone through trauma, identity exploration, or relationship challenges, I aim to co-create spaces that honour complexity and nurture growth.

Outside of sessions, you’ll find me immersed in self-care crafts, team-driven video games, travelling this beautiful planet, breaking out of escape rooms, arguing about board game rules, or staying up irresponsibly late watching horror and thriller movies. I also have an ever-growing book collection and an affinity for deep chats over warm drinks.

  • My approach to therapy is integrative, relational, and rooted in justice. I draw from a variety of therapeutic modalities to meet people where they are, tailoring support that honours both their inner worlds and external realities. I believe healing is not one-size-fits-all and I work collaboratively to co-create spaces where clients can feel both held and challenged.

What anchors it all is my unwavering commitment to intersectionality, anti-oppression, and transformative justice. Therapy with me isn’t about fixing people, it’s about reconnecting with self and others, accessing your wisdom, and finding ways to live more fully and freely in a world that often asks us to shrink.

I strive to connect with warmth, authenticity, and gentleness. I work alongside clients, not above them, offering curiosity, collaboration, and care every step of the way.

  • I’m based in Calgary, Alberta (Mountain Time), and I do my best to offer times that work well for the people I support. Whether you're juggling work, caregiving, or just life, I’ll collaborate with you to make sessions as accessible and consistent as possible. Let’s find a rhythm that feels manageable and supportive.

  • I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Mount Royal University, a minor in Psychology from Athabasca University, and a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University.

I’m trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Developmental Model for Couples Therapy, and Competent and Affirming LGBTQ2IA+ Couples and Partners Therapy. These frameworks support my work with individuals, couples, and relationship constellations in navigating emotional disconnection, identity, attachment, and relational repair.

My work is also trauma-informed and deeply influenced by trainings in Being Trauma Aware, Trauma Informed Care, Crisis De-Escalation, Preventing & Addressing Client Sexual Abuse & Sexual Misconduct, Trauma Informed Training for Children and Families Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence, and Transforming Trauma.

Additional training in Resilience, Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, Brain Story, and Unpacking Hate Crime equips me to hold space for complexity, dysregulation, and systemic harm with care and clarity. Alongside these, I incorporate elements of Solution-Focused Narrative Therapy (SFNT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and neurodiversity-affirming practices to support folks in cultivating inner coherence, resilience, and self-leadership.
